A mother and son were arrested in Auburn this weekend, police said, after violating an order of protection to verbally harass a victim and physically assault the victim's father and his vehicle.
Auburn Police Department officers responded Sunday evening to a report of a fight at a residence on Columbus Street, the department said in a news release. Police learned that Jacob J. VanFleet had gone there in violation of an order of protection a resident had against him. He then forced his way into an enclosed porch by damaging a door and began yelling at the victim through a locked door, police said.Â
The victim's father soon arrived only to be assaulted by VanFleet, police said. He hit the father in the back of the head as VanFleet's mother, Julie VanFleet, jumped on the man's back, causing him to fall. Jacob VanFleet then kicked him in the left eye, police continued, causing it to swell almost completely shut. Jacob VanFleet also punched the vehicle of the victim's father several times, leaving dents.
When officers attempted to take Jacob VanFleet into custody he resisted arrest, police said, and his mother pushed an officer as he tried to control her son. Both were eventually taken into custody.
Jacob VanFleet has been charged with two counts of first-degree criminal contempt, a Class E felony, as well as fourth-degree criminal mischief, endangering the welfare of a child, third-degree assault, fourth-degree criminal mischief and resisting arrest, all misdemeanors. He was processed and transported to the Cayuga County Jail for CAP arraignment.
Julie VanFleet has been charged with second-degree obstructing governmental administration and second-degree harassment, both misdemeanors. She was released on an appearance ticket.
