Gov. Kathy Hochul has deployed National Guard personnel to Auburn Correctional Facility amid a correction officer strike affecting most state prisons.Ìý

Striking officers observed the National Guard members entering the prison Wednesday. That evening, a video provided to ÈËÊÞÐÔ½» shows more National Guard soldiers arriving at the facility.

Hochul said Tuesday that she would send National Guard personnel to secure the prisons if the strike continued Wednesday.Ìý

Auburn correction officers were on strike for a second day after beginning their protest Tuesday. The strike began Monday at three prisons before it expanded to at least 25 facilities.Ìý

It's unknown how many National Guard members were deployed to Auburn. One striker told ÈËÊÞÐÔ½» that six soldiers entered the prison.Ìý

The state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, which oversees state prisons, did not respond to ÈËÊÞÐÔ½»'s questions Wednesday.Ìý

The New York State Police has deployed troopers to provide exterior security at prisons affected by the strike. A state police car was seen outside Auburn Correctional Facility on Wednesday.Ìý

Correction officers launched their strike due to unsafe working conditions, mandated overtime and several other issues. The officers have provided a list of demands to DOCCS. The department responded that many of the demands would require legislative action or violate the contract ratified in 2024.Ìý

The New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association, the union representing most correction officers, did not sanction the strike and has urged its members to return to work.Ìý

State law prohibits public employee strikes. Hochul said Wednesday that the "illegal and unlawful" correction officer strike is "jeopardizing the safety of their colleagues, the prison population and causing undue fear for the residents in the surrounding communities." 

Hochul added that the state is taking legal action. Employees participating in the strike could face penalties, including fines or termination.Ìý
