The state Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting on a proposed project to replace a 93-year-old bridge on routes 5 and 20 that connects Cayuga and Seneca counties.Â
The meeting will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Vince's Park, 1608 Vince's Park Drive in Seneca Falls. DOT representatives will attend to answer questions and the public can review the preliminary project plans.Â
The bridge is located in the town of Tyre, Seneca County, and carries routes 5 and 20 over the Cayuga-Seneca Canal. It was built in 1932 and has reached the end of its useful life, according to the DOT. The bridge has a poor rating.Â
A new bridge will be built, but it will have different features. It will be longer and narrower, according to the DOT, and "will be constructed in accordance with modern design standards, enhancing safety and mobility for pedestrians and motorists alike." It will be able to carry all legal loads, the DOT says, including buses, fire trucks and tractor-trailers.Â
The project is a few years away. It is in the preliminary design phase, with construction expected to begin in 2028. During construction, a temporary two-lane bridge will be installed south of the existing bridge.Â
It will cost between $15 million and $25 million to replace the bridge, according to the DOT.Â
