Carla Freedman, who served as the top federal prosecutor for Cayuga and more than 30 other upstate New York counties, has left the U.S. Attorney's Office in Syracuse.Â
Freedman released a statement Monday announcing the immediate end of her tenure as U.S. attorney for the Northern District of New York. Her departure was expected after President Donald Trump took office.Â
U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, who represents New York, recommended Freedman for the post. Former President Joe Biden nominated Freedman in August 2021.Â
When the U.S. Senate confirmed Freedman in October 2021, she made history as the first woman to serve as U.S. attorney for the Northern District of New York.Â
Before Freedman became the region's top federal prosecutor, she held other positions within the U.S. Attorney's Office in Syracuse. She was an assistant U.S. attorney from 2007 to 2021, including a three-year stint as the supervisory assistant U.S. attorney and narcotics chief.
"During my tenure I have had the good fortune to work with some of the finest public servants in my office as well as with our federal, state and local law enforcement partners," Freedman said. "I could not be more proud of the work and the accomplishments we have achieved in the pursuit of justice, always with integrity and commitment to the rule of law."Â
Trump will nominate Freedman's successor. Until a new U.S. attorney is confirmed, Daniel Hanlon — who served as first assistant U.S. attorney under Freedman — will be the acting U.S. attorney.Â
