INDIANAPOLIS 鈥 Ten things from the NFL scouting combine:
1. Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott arrived here over the weekend to begin his second offseason on the league鈥檚 competition committee. McDermott, Todd Bowles (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), Sean McVay (Los Angeles Rams) and Mike Tomlin (Pittsburgh Steelers) are the coaches on the 10-person committee that will ultimately recommend rule changes to the owners next month in Palm Beach, Fla.

Bills quarterback Josh Allen sneaks for a first down against the Broncos on Jan. 12.
2. Top topic according to the NFL website on Sunday night and Monday morning was an unidentified team proposing modifying the push-the-quarterback sneak play.
I thought the objective was to gain a yard 鈥 or 2 yards 鈥 by any allowed means. For a team like the Bills, it鈥檚 using quarterback/armored tank Josh Allen with a push from running back James Cook, fullback Reggie Gilliam or even wide receiver Khalil Shakir. The rule should stand. It鈥檚 up to the defense to stop it by not letting teams get into third- and fourth-and-short.

3. The other early competition committee topics are the kickoff and using an electronic system to measure first downs.
The kickoff: For the 鈥渄ynamic鈥 kickoff to truly become dynamic, they must have a touchback start at the 35-yard line. Easy. It requires 24 yes votes to pass.
Electronic system: Would this help with the spotting of the football? Would a chip in the ball help transmit the end of forward progress? This seems like a big ask.
4. The defensive linemen are first up Wednesday morning to meet with the media at the Indiana Convention Center. If I鈥檓 the Bills, it鈥檚 time to really dig in on some of the edge rushers who could be there at No. 30, but especially in the second round (the Bills have two picks).
Two edge players who should be available in the second round are Ohio State鈥檚 Jack Sawyer and Arkansas鈥 Landon Jackson.
If the Bills move on from Von Miller, that leaves a top three under contract of Greg Rousseau, A.J. Epenesa and Javon Solomon.

Buffalo Bills defensive lineman Dawuane Smoot is scheduled to be a free agent next month.
5. The Bills should be proactive this week in pouring the foundation or even getting a deal done with free agent defensive lineman Dawuane Smoot. Before and after his wrist injury, he proved to be a versatile player who could play end and tackle. He is probably looking for a multiyear deal, and the Bills should be open to that.
6. It didn鈥檛 take long for former Bills strength and conditioning coach Eric Ciano to find a similar job. According to two league sources, he was hired last week to lead the Jacksonville Jaguars鈥 strength and conditioning department. He will be reunited with former Bills players Mitch Morse and Gabe Davis and special teams coordinator Heath Farwell.
Ciano joins a Jaguars organization with a new coach (Liam Coen), general manager (James Gladstone) and executive vice president of football operations (Pro Football Hall of Fame offensive tackle Tony Boselli). Out with the experienced (general manager Trent Baalke and coach Doug Pederson) and in with the new. Boselli鈥檚 hire was critical for owner Shad Khan because it should create synergy across all departments.
7. As usual, there is hubbub about who is not working out at the combine, a list led by Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders. So what, I say. He has a ton of video for teams to examine, and he will put on a show at Colorado鈥檚 Pro Day.
8. Let鈥檚 eliminate one possibility for Sanders鈥 Colorado teammate, Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter: Full-time offense and part-time defense. That simply wouldn鈥檛 work, shuttling Hunter onto the field as a cornerback. The practical way to deploy Hunter is as a full-time cornerback and situational receiver. What a rare player.
9. Twenty-three coaches are scheduled to make a podium appearance this week. The list doesn鈥檛 include St. Francis alum/New York Giants coach Brian Daboll. I was looking forward to asking him about Allen winning NFL MVP. Oh well, maybe at next month鈥檚 league meeting.
10. Bills general manager Brandon Beane is scheduled to meet with the media at 2 p.m. Tuesday. To those who think he won鈥檛 say anything, I go back to what my first sports editor in Manhattan, Kan., told me when I came back from an event whining about a lack of good quotes. 鈥淢aybe you weren鈥檛 asking the right questions,鈥 he told me. Bingo.
